We offer Stand Up Paddle board (SUP) workshops and certification courses from the American Canoe Association (ACA), World Paddle Association (WPA), and also for teaching SUP Yoga.

ACA SUP CERTIFICATION

The ACA SUP Certification is designed to provide accreditation and to produce the best instructions that the SUP industry has to offer.

The instructor certification workshop will give you the opportunity and tools you need to become the best-certified instructor that you can be, whether that’s teaching basic lessons, offering rentals, running guided paddle trips, teaching SUP yoga, or coaching on-water fitness classes and paddle stroke techniques.

The American Canoe Association (ACA) Certification is considered to be the industry’s gold standard of certifications with over 30 years of being in the paddlesports industry.

Level 1: ACA ICW (2 or 3 days) – $375

SUP LEVEL 1 // LEVEL 1&2

Skills you’ll learn in this course include group management on flatwater and in mild conditions, teaching methods, trip leading methods, safety and how to teach the paddle strokes, moving around on the board, different stances, draws and more!

  • All ACA courses (Instructor Certification Workshops – ICWs) combine two course elements:
    • An Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) – Developing and refining the Instructor Candidates current skills.
    • An Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) – Instructor Candidates demonstrating proper skills, knowledge, and teaching ability.
  • In the Level 1 & 2 course, Instructor Candidates are assessed at the appropriate level, this being a level 1 or level 2 ACA Instructor.
  • This is an instructor certification course and not a skills course, therefore, please look at the instructor criteria for Level 1 or Level 2 and self evaluate your skills before registering, as payment and attendance does not guarantee certification.

  • After certification is provided, ACA instructors may use ACA insurance instead of seeking an alternative.
  • Prior to the course Instructor Candidates will need become an American Canoe Association (ACA) member (Available Here), as well as purchase a copy of the ACA Instructors Manual (Available Here).
  • All instructors signed up must have their current age appropriate First Aid and CPR up to date.
  • Instructor candidates should have prior SUP experience and knowledge coming into the workshop.
  • In order to pass at the appropriate level, ACA Instructor Candidates must be able to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and teaching ability.
  • Day 1 – Intros, Instructor Candidates teaching topics, IT teaches topics and strokes, IT teaches rescues
  • Day 2 – Candidates teaching strokes to each other, Candidates teaching topics, IT teaching advanced skills, Candidates filmed/assessment

SUP LEVEL 3 SURF

This 2-day course is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) and an Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) in the L3 SUP Surf discipline. It is an essential course for the SUP paddler looking to get certified, gain the experience, and confidence needed to teach students to become safer, competent paddlers in the surf zone and breaking waves. The Instructor Certification Workshop (ICW) provides SUP Instructors the of ocean safety and a solid framework of SUP surfing teaching techniques. This is a fast-paced and intensive workshop designed to refine your instructional techniques and familiarize yourself with the intensive American Canoe Association SUP Surf curriculum.

WPA SUP CERTIFICATION

This 1-day course is great for those looking to become SUP certified through the World Paddle Association (WPA). It is good for those looking to learn the most basic techniques and information about paddling, and a great course to take to build up your confidence out on the water. The perfect introductory course for those interested in instructing others in the fastest growing watersport around!

  • The WPA Level 1 course is a 1-day course from 9am-5pm and it is for those looking to become SUP certified at a very basic level
  • The mission of the WPA is to provide a comprehensive voice, fair and equal access and organizational structure to the sport of Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and its participants in a manner that benefits the collective paddling community.

SUP YOGA CERTIFICATION

Learn the sport and become backed with the proper credentials to teach SUP Yoga. Black Creek Guides is proud to offer SUP Yoga courses for those interested in teaching!

We recommend taking the courses in a 4 step process to have a solid backing of credentials of both an E-RYT200 yoga teacher and also the American Canoe Association (ACA) certification. Below is a list of the courses/workshops we offer that will get you the credentials to become a legitimate certified SUP Yoga Instructor:

  1. Participate in the SUP Yoga Immersion Course or a SUP Yoga Workshop
  2. Become more comfortable with the SUP strokes, terminology, and gain more experience paddling and even possibly teaching.

SUP YOGA IMMERSION COURSE

This immersion course is designed to expose you to the new opportunities of taking your Yoga teaching experience to a floating mat. This course is perfect for those with a background in yoga who are looking for new teaching opportunities!

  • Designed for Yoga teachers looking to teach SUP Yoga.
  • Yoga experience is a must.
  • No prior experience required, although some paddling experience is recommended.
  • Receive 18 hours accredited CEUs after completion from an accredited E-RYT200 Yoga teacher.
  • Course cost also includes the use of a board, paddle, and safety gear
  • Two-day course from 8am-5pm each day
ACA SUP LEVEL 1 INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP

This course is designed for those who are competent stand up paddlers, possibly those who have taken the Immersion course (not required), and want to become stand up paddle instructors to teach SUP and SUP yoga on the water as a American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified SUP Instructor.

  • Designed for competent paddlers and those looking to become certified SUP instructors to teach SUP Yoga
  • Instructor candidates should have prior paddle experience and knowledge coming into the workshop
  • Must be up-to-date on CPR and First Aid Certifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • No prior SUP teaching experience required, although some teaching experience is recommended
  • Receive the opportunity of becoming an ACA SUP Certified instructor’
  • Course cost does not include the use of a board, paddle, and safety gear
  • Two or three day course from 8:30am-5:30pm each day
ACA SUP YOGA ENDORSEMENT CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP

This course is designed for those who are certified ACA level 1 SUP Instructors and also 200+ RYT hours Yoga instructors. This endorsement is provided by the American Canoe Association and is the first certification and course of its kind that is well respected and a gold standard for SUP Yoga enthusiasts.

  • Must be at least a 200+ RYT hours Yoga Instructor
  • Must be a current ACA member and have a valid ACA SUP Instructor certification
  • Must be up-to-date on CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • One day Course from 8:30am-5:30pm
